• The Society was registered as a Co-operative Group Housing Society on 10.06.1975 with the Registrar, Cooperative Societies Delhi, under Registration No- 2184. The Society was allotted 4.12 acres of land on main Mahrauli Road near Essex Farm in village Kalu Sarai, New Delhi, by the DDA in 1976.
  • The Society after considering the designs and quotations from various leading architectural firms, finally decided to appoint M/s Kothari and Associates, the reputed architects of India, whose designs were considered the best. The architects prepared the layout plan of the complex keeping in view the most important natural factor, its orientation and other requirements. The Housing units although compact are yet spacious to have sufficient cross air and lights from all sides.
  • The Society constructed during 1976-79, 200 dwelling units for its members consisting of seven Towers, 60 Flats of ‘A’ type with a covered area of 130 Sq mtr each and five towers of 140 flats of ‘B’ type with a covered area of 97.58 sq mtr each. The ground area is not cluttered as all the blocks have been built on stilts which can be utilised for other utility services for the benefits of the members.
  • Each ‘A’ type flat has a living-cum-dining room, a kitchen, 3 bed rooms with attached bath, a balcony which connects the living room plus one guest bed room with toilet. Each ‘B’ type flat has a living-cum-dining room, two bed rooms, one of them provided with attached bath and a guest-cum-study room and toilet and a balcony.
  • The design unifies conflicting architectural forms and the complex was the first multi-story apartment in Co-operative Sector in Delhi.
  • The construction of the buildings began in July 1976 and allotments of the flats to the members were done in the draw of lots held on 04.04.1979.
  • Late Shri Puran Singh Azad, the founder President of the Society has been the life and moving spirit in transferring a mere idea into a reality. With single minded devotion, he supervised the construction and arranged the finance for the project. In recognition of his dedicated services, the General Body meeting in its meeting held on March 4, 1979 decided to name the complex as “AZAD APARTMENTS”.
